How reliable is the Oberholzer- Gee/Strumpf Paper on File- Sharing?

چکیده
This is a detailed critique of the empirical findings, factual claims, and logic of the empirical examination of file-sharing by Felix Oberholzer-Gee and Koleman Strumpf. It is written for a general audience and provides details of calculations, data, and industry measurements that allow replication by the reader whenever possible. October 2011: There is now a new instance of Oberholzer-Gee and Strumpf apparently intending to mislead readers, this time about the empirical findings in the file-sharing literature. Their attempts to miscast the literature so as to weaken the apparent effect of file-sharing are particularly easy to recognize, once exposed. See http://ssrn.com/abstract=1932518

The Internet has drastically lowered the cost of copying information goods and provides a natural crucible to assess the implications of reduced protection. We consider the specific case of file sharing and its effect on the legal sales of music. A dataset containing 0.01% of the world’s downloads...

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks have markedly weakened the protection for certain forms of intellectual property (IP). Virtually every form of information which can be transformed into a digital file is currently shared and downloaded on networks such as KaZaA and eDonkey. A leading question in economics is whether strong protection for IP is needed to ensure adequate returns to innovation (Plant, ...

The economic theory of federalism is largely built around the premise that more heterogeneous preferences result in more decentralized policy making. Despite its prominence and importance, this central tenet of economic federalism has never been empirically evaluated. This paper presents the first formal test of the link between preference heterogeneity and endogenous policy decentralization us...
متن کاملUsing Markets to Measure the Impact of File Sharing on Movie Revenues
File sharing provides a useful laboratory for investigating the economic importance of intellectual property protection. There are two main empirical challenges: overcoming the non-random timing of the arrival date of illicit copies and dealing with low statistical power due to limited sample size. This paper uses markets to address these issues in the context of movies. I show forwardlooking m...

With the popularity of p2p application for resource sharing and the availability of resources has motivated the researchers to examine the potentials of p2p applications in a dynamic environment. With the success of...
